The world's oceans cover 70% of the planet's surface.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hundreds of millions of people rely on the bounty of the seas for their survival and their cultural identity. Yet compared to terrestrial ecosystems, relatively little is known about our oceans.

What is conclusively known now is that the pH balance of the oceans has changed dramatically since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution: A 30% increase in acidification. With near unanimity, scientists now agree that the burning of fossil fuels is fundamentally reshaping ocean chemistry. Experts predict that over the next century, steady increases in carbon dioxide emissions and the continued rise in the acidity of the oceans will cause most of the world's fisheries to experience a total bottom-up collapse--a state that could last for millions of years.

Through the mass medium of film, A Sea Change will broaden the discussion about the dramatic changes we are seeing in the chemistry of the oceans, and convey the urgent threat those changes pose to our survival.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ocean acidification threatens over 1,000,000 species with extinction--and with them, our entire way of life.

For my first event, I was advised to start with what I know. This is why it made sense to work with friends and family on an issue that is near and dear to my heart–waters, fish and how we relate to the natural environment each day. I am coordinating some meet and mingle events for Northwest Chinook Recovery. This smaller, more intimate event provides a great way to combine elected officials and donors with present and future supporters to educate on the issues and recognize those leaders who have been critical in an organization’s success.

For the event I have a few directives, stylish, understated, and cheap–in today’s economy actual extravagance doesn’t make too much sense.

So, we will use what we’ve got. I am a big fan of white paint–it can transform a room or a prop nearly instantly –saving for drying time, of course. We will use painted boxes as display stands–combining these with some dried starfish that I gathered from my sister’s wedding of last year. Viola–a gorgeous thematic space for nearly no money at all.

For the meal, I am working with the host and the many local farmers enagaged in the organization to provide freshly caught salmon, wines, cheeses and, hopefully, by coordinating with our farmers’ connections, all the vegetables for the event will be fresh, local and neighbor provided.

I am also collaborating with Northwest Chinook Recovery on a panel for the film A Sea Change. http://www.aseachange.net/ playing at the Egyptian Theater in Seattle on June 1st. More details coming soon!
